This cycling loop will take you through lush vineyards, picturesque valleys and the charming villages of this renowned wine region. Along your way, pause for a while in Beaujeu and take the time to visit the Huilerie Beaujolaise and discover the artisanal methods used to produce olive oil, an entirely natural product. On the way back you will pass through the vineyards of the Beaujoais appellation, planted mainly with Gamay grapes. The vineyards of the Beaujolais region are renowned for their red wines made from the Gamay grape. The most famous is, of course, the Beaujolais Nouveau, a ‘primeur’ or young wine sold on the third Thursday in November. The other wines of the region are divided into three categories:
– Beaujolais Villages: wines from 38 specific towns, typically more complex and structured than the Beaujolais Nouveau.
– Beaujolais Cru: wines produced in 10 of Beaujolais’ most prestigious crus, such as Brouilly, Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent
– Beaujolais AOC: wines produced in the vineyards of all other towns which are usually lighter and fruitier.
