This self-guided cycle tour of Provence starts off in Grignan and explores some of the most pretty, unspoilt locations of this delightful region of France. Here you have landscapes so beautiful they were captured on the canvasses of Cézanne and Van Gogh to name a few.

This tour is packed with sensory delights as this area of France is renowned for its vineyards and olive groves and endless lavender fields. As well as the sweet smells in the air, the countryside flashes a splendid mix of purples, deep greens and soft greys which look idealistic against the stony colours of the villages.  Along the way you can explore attractive mediaeval villages with ancient architecture and castles.

Provence offers a great choice for foodies as the sunny Mediterranean climate makes for some wonderful fresh cuisine. There are many wines, cheeses and pressed olive oils to taste as well as many restaurants to choose from, all selling delectable cuisine made from locally sourced produce. The area is famous for truffles and there are various local truffle markets to visit.

Program

Day 1: Grignan

Upon arrival make your way to your first hotel. After check-in you are free to relax or explore. We recommend taking the time to visit Rochecourbière Cave, about half a kilometre from Grignan. This natural shallow cave was a favourite writing spot of Madame de Sévigné, a French aristocrat famed for her letter writing. She is respected in France as one of the great icons of French literature.

Day 2: Grignan – Suze-la-Rousse, 21 miles/35 kms

Cycle to La Garde-Adhémara, a village that has kept elements of its mediaeval history alive by maintaining traces of the castle and old houses. Take the time to absorb your striking surroundings as there are unobstructed views of the Rhône Valley and the Vivarais Mountains. Next, cycle to Saint-Paul-3-Châteaux, a walled village with many of the ancient walls still standing. You could explore some of the Roman relics that include an amphitheater and mosaics.  The final stretch of today’s adventure will take you to Suze-la- Rousse where you will spend the night in a hotel.  Perhaps visit the magnificent Château de Suze-la-Rousse which is  in its near-original condition.  The name means ‘Suzy the Red’, inspired by the lady of the castle and her flaming red hair.

Day 3: Suze-la-Rousse – Nyons, 22miles/36kms

After breakfast it’s time to get back on the saddle and begin today’s adventure. Cycle to the charming, historic village of Visan, then on to Vinsobres. Today your senses will truly be heightened as you cycle your way past lavender fields, vineyards and olive groves. Those that wish can take a slight detour to Richerenches where there is a truffle market every Saturday. When you get to Nyons you have reached your destination for the day where there will be an overnight stay in a hotel. Nyons is renowned for its olive oil, and there is a very pleasant olive museum that is worth a look.

Day 4: Nyons – Dieulefit, 21 miles/35 kms

Cycle through Gorges de l’Eygues, a narrow and winding mountain pass with breath taking views and scenery. Today’s leg of the adventure flows through the quaint villages of Condorcet and La Paillette, over the col de Valouse at 747m.. Both are incredibly charming and typical of this area. The day’s ride will end in Dieulefit a stunning village steeped in history and equally as beautiful as the others. There is an overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 5: Dieulefit – Grignan 21 miles/35 kms

After breakfast it’s time for the final stretch of your amazing French adventure. Today’s ride will start by heading to Le Poêt Laval, located on a rugged hill in the Jabron Valley Overlooking wooded hills, this beautiful village, perched on a hill is host to some remarkable authentic old buildings. You might like to stroll along Rue Neuve, as from here you can get a spectacular view of Saint Jean des Commandeurs, a 12th century historical monument. Stop off at Montagne de la Série to take in the extraordinary view. You will end up back in Grignan, where you will spend your final night in a hotel. Whilst here, if you didn’t on day 1, check out Château de Madame de Sévigné, a magnificent Renaissance castle.
