Gastronomy and wines of the Loire

Unlike many French regions, the Loire is best known for its Castles and its history with the kings of France. It is also known for its wines, such as its fairly light red wines. But above all its dry, semi-dry, mellow and sometimes even sweet white wines that will delight your taste buds. You can accompany these delicious wines with the gastronomic specialties of the Loire Valley. Have you ever tasted the rillons and rillettes from Tours? And did you know that there are many truffles in this region? Some will also appreciate the andouillettes in Vouvray. Some cheeses are also not to be missed, such as the goat cheese from Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine. To finish with a little sweet touch, you can visit the Maison de la Poire Tapée in Rivarennes.

The cradle of bicycle travel

The Loire is the perfect region to discover roaming cycling holidays. As a family, as a couple or with friends, the equipped cycle paths and shared lanes will allow you to pedal in complete safety. Overall the routes are quite flat, along the Loire and the Cher, although there will sometimes be some small climbs. The Châteaux are fairly well distributed and will be the occasion for lovely historical breaks. This region is a pioneer in the development of itinerant cycling. The routes are perfectly indicated, and the cultural sites are very well equipped with most of the time lockers for your luggage.

Weather

The climate of the Loire Valley is quite mild, and generally warm and temperate. There can be precipitation at any time of the year. We advise you to come to the Loire for your cycling holidays between May and October.

The unmissable sites of the Loire Valley

We cannot speak here of all the monuments and sites to visit in this region. Of course, there is the Château de Chambord commissioned by François 1er which is the most impressive of the Loire Castles. But the Châteaux of Amboise, Chaumont sur Loire and Chenonceau are wonderful too. We also fell in love with the Chateau d’Azay le Rideau and the gardens of Villandry. If you like to immerse yourself in your childhood memories, visit the Château d’Ussé from which Charles Perrault would have been inspired for the tale of Sleeping Beauty. If you are a fan of history and Leonardo da Vinci, we recommend Clos Lucé in Amboise. We also invite you to explore the many troglodyte dwellings in the region, especially that of the village of Troo. Steeped in history, and perfectly suited for roaming by bike, the region will make for a wonderful cycling holiday.
